Ayyappa Deeksha : DOs & Don'ts

Ayyappa Deeksha is a religious observation done as an offering to Lord Ayyappa following the rules & regulations of utmost celibacy (as practiced by Brahmacharis in good olden days).  Deeksha should be observed for 41 days.

WHO can do it?
Males: Any one can do it.
Females: Below age 10 and above 50 can observe deeksha

WHEN?
It is usually observed during the Mandalam (which usually falls between Nov 2nd week and Sankranthi). Mandalam starts on first day of Kartika Masam (as per Kerala Calendar)

WHERE?
Mala Dharana can be done in any temple. It is usually done by Guruswami (who had been to Sabrimala 18 times) or the priest at the temple. Deeksha will be ended after returning home from Sabarimala. Mala should not be removed in Pamba or Sannidham.

WHAT to do?
Take bath in early morning and evening with cold water. (Clarify usage of Soap and Shampoo from your guru Swamy).
Daily visit temple.
Do the pooja twice a day, morning (before sun rise) and evening (after sunset).
Do your regular daily pooja followed by Ashotharam (108 namas) to Ganesh, Subramanyam, Durga & Ayyappan.
Chant Hairivarasanam only after evening Pooja.
No need for cooked Prasadam every day. Fruits as Naivedyam for Ayyappan are OK.
Take bath as soon you come home in the evening from work.
Wear only Black Dress.
You should never take the mala out.
Use fresh clothes every day. So, have two pairs of black dress and wash them every day.
No Breakfast.
Lunch: Should take fresh cooked food before noon. No left overs from previous day.
Dinner: Should take light food like, upma, idli.
No onion, garlic, egg or meat products.
Outside food should be completely avoided.
If anyone calls you for Annadanam you should not refuse the invitation. Make sure they should have prepared the meal after taking bath etc.
When you or your spouse is preparing meal, make sure you clean the stove before cooking.
Follow celibacy to the core. Idea is to be far from 'kama, krodha, moha, lobha...'
Sleep on ground without pillow and bed.
NO Entertainment. (Means no partying, no watching TV, listening to film music etc, no playing games)
Control Anger and talk less.
Call all women (including wife) as 'Matha' and men as 'Swamy'
Bramhacharyam: Should not even touch your spouse.
During monthly cycle for women, husband taking Deeksha is not supposed to see the wife at all. (Some say, it is not needed, but lot of people try to follow this rule too). If it is not possible in the house/apartment you are living, that is OK. But we might see women who are in their monthly cycles outside in shops or may shake hands with them (at work or shop). That is the reason it is recommended to take bath immediately you reach home from outside)
No Smoking, Drinking.
No footwear.
Not supposed to shave your beard or comb your hair.
Try to attend as many as bhajans in your deeksha time.
Try to have tulasi leaf with you to be away from evil thoughts.

PLEASE REMEMBER THAT:
Idea is to follow these rules with utmost discipline and dedication, so we can control & overcome inherent human bad qualities one by one like anger, lust etc. By doing it for 18 years, it is hoped we overcome all our bad qualities and become a SWAMY ourselves (or saints). Some people say that is one of the reason for 18 steps at Sabarimala Ayyappa temple. It is also believed by Hindus and many other people that, if we practice anything for 40 days, we get used to it and continue it. That is the reason most of the
deekshas are for 40 days and so is Ayyappa Deeksha. So, if you can, take Deeksha for 40

One thing any Sasthras say is: Follow rules to the best of abilities, considering the environment we are in. So if you can't wear black dress to work or if you can't sleep without a pillow because of health reasons, that is acceptable. But not following Diet and Celibacy restrictions is NOT ACCEPTABLE.

  1. Swamy,

I have a question. How do we follow the deeksha when we are abroad?

I am in UAE and following the dress code or not wearing shoes is actually a difficult task.

Is there any way, I can wear the regular dress and shoes and follow the other rules?

    Thanks

  2. You may and certainly can follow this Deeksha where ever you are..
Dedicating Mind and Heart to Ayyappan is more important.. so even if you wear formals, shoe, shave your beard etc., to your work place in unavoidable circumstances , it is acceptable. But, I suggest you to follow the below rules as a mandatory which will help you to get the maximum benefits of practicing this Deeksha..
    1. Don't ever remove the Mala (Tulasi and Rudraksha with Ayyappa's dollar)
    2. Don't ever think of going against the rules that applies to your mind and heart (Like having sathvik food, observing brahmacharya , being calm and peaceful etc.,mentioned in the above post)
    3. Try your best to wear black attire (as Astrologically it enables you to overcome the obstacles caused during Lord Shani's periods of Dasas, Anthardasas, Sade sati, arthastama sani etc.,)
Ayyappa Deeksha is something that prepares you mentally and physically strong enough to over come pain, emotions, obstacles etc., in life to achieve success in every positive endeavor you make.
    So, All the best!

    1. I suggest you to please avoid observing this Deeksha during those situations, as you may have more responsibilities to be taken care and more emotions to handle. These situations may not allow you to concentrate on your Deeksha. Better, take a gap for at least 6 months to an year and let the things settle at your home and then continue this spiritual journey once your mind is peace.

    2. Smoking is something that YOU undertook as a habit for your own happiness. If I am not wrong no one imposed that on you. So, I don't think overcoming such habits that were created by "YOURSELF" cannot be handled.
Probably you may need to put little effort to overcome it ; moreover you have a ready fact in your mind that, you are now going to SAVE YOURSELF and YOUR FAMILY by avoiding this habit! What else you want! You are a winner!

  8. How if someone fall in sick during deeksha time? I mean can they go to hospitals wearing maalai because there will be birth and death in hospitals ? what if the person admitted in hospital during deeksha?

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. In my several years of this spiritual journey, I never came across a Swamy falling serious ill and getting admitted to a hospital. May be this is due to the stern rules we follow during the Deeksha period that helps us to be healthy all the time.
However visiting hospitals for general checkups or minor health issues is fine to an extent. In spite of our inevitable situations in meeting or coming across people of different conditions, we can always stabilize our self by taking complete healthy bath once we are back from the hospital and then perform our regular Poojas. (Technically this is to safeguard our health from unhealthy environment at Hospitals)
In severe cases where getting admitted to a hospital is a compulsion, I suggest you to terminate the Deeksha and take care of your health first. You may continue the same once you are back to healthy life or the following year.
      Swamy Saranam!

    2. Thank you for the reply ayyappa. Actually I have seen few swamys fall in sick during deeksha. That could be because of detoxification process in our body system. But still I have seen few swamys falling serious ill. I definitely would say that this is because of they did not follow the strict rules of observation. Bhramacharya viratham, vegetarian, bath twice a day and many others rules must be followed without any excuses because I have come across few incidents related to this. Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa

    1. Please ensure that the delivery date doesn't fall within your 45 days of Deeksha. I suggest you to see at least a months gap between your completion of the Deeksha and the delivery date of your wife. The simple reason behind this suggestion is, you as a Husband and father should carry more responsibilities and provide more support (physical & emotional) to your dependent(s). Swamy Deeksha should never stop or break responsibilities in following one's Dharma as a Husband and Father.

Hereafter whenever any of the members who are in Swamy Deeksha and following this blog comes up with such a situation , they may just ignore the same and carry on with their respective work/profession. But, later before having Bhiksha (lunch) or performing evening Pooja, they can just follow the process of taking pure and complete bath, Chant the 108 sharanams, lit & offer Harathi to Swamy and then perform the same. In the case where taking Bath before Lunch at office is not possible, at least wash your hands and foot with clean water, chant the Sharanams of Swamy and then have your Lunch.

    1. Let me take this opportunity to address all the aspirants of Ayyappa Deeksha. Kindly don't plan or suggest this Deeksha to the kids/younger generation who are into studies. Let them have their own struggle to concentrate on their studies and fulfill their goals in life. Their extreme devotion towards Swamy Ayyappa can be expressed either by offering prayers in Temples or participate in seva during Padi Pujas organized extensively during this season. However, answering the above question.. Sleep in the afternoon i.e after good lunch (Bhiksha) makes one feel lethargic that further deviates them into unpleasant thoughts and dreams. So sleep during afternoon time is not advised. In your case if you are struggling to schedule your day as per your preparation to your exams, you may take a power nap during afternoon that should help you to manage your studying hours in the later part of the day. God Bless you. Swamiye Saranam Ayyappa!

    1. Swamy in your House (your husband) must have foreseen this situation before taking up the Deeksha. Generally every individual who plans to take up Deeksha will certainly be prepared for such situations at home and plan for some alternatives suggested by Guru Swamy (like staying as a group with other individuals and organize PeeTham in a separate place). However, this is such a complicated situation that cannot be considered as Dosha (as there is no intended mistake/sin from your end and its part of nature). My only suggestion to you is to leave your place for those few days and stay in your mother's/sister's place. You may come back once you complete your menstrual period. This is only to keep you comfort (physically and mentally) while going through such painful and uncomfortable process. God Bless You! Swamy Saranam!

    1. Taking up Deeksha by first timers (Kanni Swamy)under the Mentor-ship of Guru Swamy is recommended to ensure that the 41 days of Deeksha period drives well with Purity and Strictness. Guru Swamy safeguards the sanctity of the PeeTam by implementing precise Deeksha Niyamaalu, there by helps the first and early timers to overcome the hurdles and successfully complete the Deeksha with utmost dedication.
In your case I suggest you to request a person with Guru Swamy status to be your Mentor. Guru Swamy can be from your family, friends or anyone you may find at your nearest Ayyappan Temple. You may keep in touch with him on regular basis over phone or personal meetings, invite him to your PeeTam once in a while and request him to guide /bless your group throughout the Deeksha period.
Also Please ensure that your travel with a Guru swamy during your Irumudi submission at Sabarimala.
      Swamy Saranam!

    2. With regards to your breakfast during Deeksha period, our elders recommends Mithaharam (means limited food). Whatever you have whether its Breakfast, Lunch or Dinner, please have it in limited quantities. This is to keep you and your body fit to overcome hunger and other challenging situations while trekking at Sabarimala.

In your case sticking to your profession is never against Deeksha niyamam. Only thing you need to keep in mind is, you may follow the attire (Dress, Vibhoothi , Bare foot etc.,) and other Niyamalu only during your Pooja time and the time you spend in the places other than Hospital. But, during your duty and in the hospital premises please make sure that you take enough care of being hygiene while handing sensitive responsibilities like baby birth etc.,. This is to ensure the safety of yourself and the patients you treat.

Can i continue the viratham after returning from the temple(after removing the mala) for 41 days. is it accepted? or i shoudl travel only after finishing 41 days of viratham. Because my guruswamy used to say , Even by praying god properly and with full heart, we can visit the temple even with 1 day of mala. Please let me know....

    1. Visiting Sabarimala is like visiting any other temple. So visiting Sabarimala any number of times during Deeksha period doesn't affect your Deeksha. But, having an ultimate darshan after 41 days with the submission of irumudi and taking up Padhunettam padi only makes you complete the Deeksha. Swamy Saranam!

    1. Deeksha is all about dedicating your mind, heart and soul to Swamy. You may take up Deeksha by following the suggested Niyamalu (Dos and Donts) for 41 days. After completion of the same you may go for Swamy Darsanam at Sabarimala. Only thing is you are not allowed for the submission of Irumudi and aking up Padhunettam padi.

But, research says that there are lot of benefits associated with consumption of the same. From a medical stand point break-fast (Breaking the fast that goes on for a night) is very much essential for all of us. So, I suggest you to take something before start to your work (generally naivedyam that we offer to Swamy like Milk ,Poha etc., in our daily poojas) and balance the same with your dinner by having limited intake (just like fruits).
